LARIMORE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - Fundraising efforts are slowly paying off in Larimore, where people are raising money to fix the community's swimming pool.

The aging outdoor pool could be closed if money isn't found for repairs. It'll be open the first week in June, but will operate with some much needed repairs.

"Like the deck that is cracked and heaved in spots. That is all safety issues and stuff like that," Larimore Parks and Recreation President Dean Elfman said.

Elfman says the pool also must update the intake to the filtration system to bring the pool up to current government safety codes. He says it costs $10 to $15,000 a year to operate the pool, but it's worth every penny.

"Basically somewhere for them to go and to keep them out of trouble and stuff like that," Elfman said.

It's estimated 50-75 kids in the Larimore area use the pool on the warmer summer days.

"West Grand Forks county, parts of easter Nelson County up to the Walsh County line," Elfman said.

About a third of the 350,000 needed to fix the pool has been raised. The next closest place to swim is the Larimore Dam Recreation Area, but the water can be prone to algae by mid-summer.

Even if the money is all raised for the repairs it would likely not be until next fall before construction would start.
