MOORHEAD – The Red River Regional Bomb Squad was called this morning to dispose of a live explosive found in a load of coal at the American Crystal Sugar processing plant in north Moorhead.

Police responded at 10:27 a.m. to the plant at 2500 11th St. N.

Lt. Brad Penas said a blasting cap came into the facility with a load of coal.

Blasting caps, which are about the size of a 2- to 3-inch-long pencil, are used in the coal-removal process. It’s not unusual for American Crystal workers to find blasting caps, but usually they’ve already been detonated.

The bomb squad was called to take custody of the blasting cap and dispose of it in a safe manner.
