GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Something was missing on North Washington Street on Wednesday.

The well-known "Home of Economy" sign came down for the first time in 50 years. It's being sent away for a face-lift.

It has been standing in front of Home of Economy since the location first opened in 1962, even during the 1988 fire that wiped out the entire store.

It took hours for workers to take down the 35-foot sign this morning.

The restoration will be done in St Cloud and will include a new coat of paint and installation of longer-life LED bulbs, among other things.

"Restore the electronics to get those back to how it was. What we're trying to do is bring it back to what it was 50 years ago when it was first put up," Home of Economy CEO Wade Pearson said.

The sign should be back up in 1 to 2 months.
