Devils Lake Housing Woes Continue

DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - Even for those who can afford it, putting a roof over your head in Devils Lake is proving to be a challenge. The housing market is facing an increase in demand and there aren't enough homes available, especially in the rental market.

DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - Even for those who can afford it, putting a roof over your head in Devils Lake is proving to be a challenge.

The housing market is facing an increase in demand and there aren't enough homes available, especially in the rental market.

There is no consensus theory as to why we're seeing a housing shortage in Devils Lake but experts say several different factors could be at play.

The housing market isn't healthy in Devils Lake.

"To have a healthy market it needs to be five percent and with the construction going on there's not very much to be rented," Paula Schuh with the Ramsey County Housing Authority said.

The vacancy rate in Devils Lake is less than one percent. Ramsey County Housing Authority Executive Director Paula Schuh says an influx of construction workers has clogged the rental market. But LaMotte Properties manager Beckie Person says that's not the case.

"We have one property, one household that's construction. The rest are normal working people in town," Beckie Person with Lamotte Properties said.

She says the housing market is stressed because homes outside of town have been swallowed up by the lake.

"Because of our lake I believe there's people who are having to move to town to keep their jobs, the expansion of the lake that we have," Schuh said.

But a lack of housing means more people are coming to Devils Lake, which is good for the local economy. Shuh says it's a good problem to have.

"The constructions will end, but hopefully we have a lot of new businesses coming to town so hopefully that will keep are market up," Schuh said.

So if you are planning to move to Devils Lake, it's best to do your homework ahead of time.

"Start looking as soon as you know you're moving to town. Don't wait to the last minute. As soon as you know you start calling because it may take a couple months for something to open up," Person said.
