Intricate 'Sand Mandala' On Display at UM-Crookston

CROOKSTON, MN (WDAZ-TV) - UMC Students are getting a chance to experience an ancient Tibetan Buddhist tradition this week.
Buddhist Monk WongDue Sangbo Gurung created the first sand mandala ever seen at the university.
The mandala consists of patterns made of colorful grains of sand.
Buddhists believe it serves as tool for guiding individuals along the path to enlightenment.
"The students have found it very interesting and are amazed that someone is painting with sand, grain by grain essentially, so it's been a very interesting learning process," Andrew Svec with UMC Public Relations and Marketing said.
The event coincides with UMC's international meal Wednesday night.
After that, the mandala will be dispersed in the Red Lake River as a symbol of the temporary existence of a life.
