GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp talked about Republican Paul Ryan's budget and her own platform during a town hall meeting in Grand Forks on Thursday night.
About 70 people came to Heitkamp's town hall discussion. The big topic of discussion was the Paul Ryan budget plan that was approved by the House at the end of March.
"Agriculture is still so critical to North Dakota's economy," Heitkamp said.
The current farm bill expires this year and Congressman Rick Berg acknowledges the need for new legislation.
"Part of this whole process is trying to get that bill agreed to in the house and senate and passed so we have some stability in agriculture," Berg said.
But Heitkamp claims Berg's vote in favor of the Paul Ryan budget will hurt the farm bill.
"Senator Conrad has listed this as a very, very serious challenge in getting the farm bill pushed through the House and getting the farm bill actually passed," Heitkamp said.
The Senate race between Rick Berg and Heidi Heitkamp is expected to be a heated battle. Heitkamp says just one of the many differences between the two is Berg's support of the Ryan budget plan.
"Somebody who voted for this, $180 billion in cuts. We know who that is, it's Paul Ryan's budget voted favorably by Congressman Berg," Heitkamp said.
As this Senate race gets underway, it's expected that both sides will be spending a lot of money. It was announced this week that a new Super PAC will be spending money in the state to help Berg's campaign.
