DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - A Devils Lake High School teacher is the school district's teacher of the year.

Neither teachers nor students knew why they were assembled Friday morning until Superintendent Steve Swiontek announced that Phyllis Kadrmas had been named the teacher of the year.

Kadrmas teaches language arts classes and has 37 years of teaching experience, including more than a decade in Devils Lake.

She says she's thrilled about the honor, but that awards aren't the reason she goes to school every day.

"The kids. Seeing their lightbulbs go on, seeing them come to an understanding, seeing them grow. They're always entertaining. They're always fun," Kadrmas said.

Kadrmas will go on to be considered for the 2013 North Dakota Teacher of the Year award, which will be awarded in August.
