GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Dave Hakstol led the Sioux men's hockey team through some substantial adversity this season, winning a third consecutive Broadmoor trophy, then getting the team to the West Region final.

Many observers believed it was his best coaching job in his eight years as UND's head coach. On Friday, he was honored for it.

The website Inside College Hockey named Hakstol its national coach of the year.

Hakstol's team battled numerous injuries. In fact, eight players missed 110 games because of injuries. Down the stretch, UND played 14 games with fewer than 18 skaters, yet the Sioux went 11-3 in those games.

UND ended the season with 26 wins, 13 losses and three ties and a conference record of 16-11-1.

Hakstol guided the Sioux to 22 wins in their final 30 games. The Sioux finished fourth in the WCHA and went on to become the first team to win three consecutive WCHA Final Five championships.
