GFAFB Firefighter Receives National Award

A Grand Forks Air Force Base Firefighter was honored with the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Firefighter of the Year award.

A Grand Forks Air Force Base Firefighter was honored with the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Firefighter of the Year award.

Jeffery Rueben is the Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention at the Air Force base.

Rueben was also recognized at the state level this year as the VFW's North Dakota Firefighter of the Year.

Rueben says he feels "honored" and "shocked" by winning the awards and he appreciates the support he has received from his fellow firefighters.

"I just like helping people. Everyday is different, we never know what is going to happen at work, and I like that. Giving back to the community and the Air Force, we do a lot of that as well so that's probably my favorite part," Rueben said.

This is the first time the local VFW Post 1874 has had a firefighter win both the state and national award.
