DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV0 - Economic leaders in Devils Lake say there's a housing crunch but they also have a plan to combat it.

A housing study last year showed the vacancy rate in Devils Lake at less than one percent.

Forward Devils Lake Director Chris Schilken says a healthy housing market will have a vacancy rate of three to five percent.

But Schilken says local contractors built about 20 rental units last year, and have plans for 20 more this year.

"Across the state everyone is having the housing situation. So we're just trying to help as much as we can, that there is going to be some work to be done to address the housing situation," Schilken said.

Schilken says there are plans to eventually build apartment buildings large enough for 50 rental units in Devils Lake.
