GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Monday was the baseball edition of the battle of Grand Forks. Red River played host to Central at Kraft Field where the cold turned it from a double header to one game where the winner takes all the bragging rights.

Scoreless in the second, the Knights went on a two out surge, five straight hits scored four runs. That's what started the fireworks. Kaden Monette rockets one to right that brings home Connor Sander.

Two runs later, it's Nick Moe's turn. The senior's single plates Zach Walls and Central was up four nothing early.

Red River fights back making it a one run game in the fifth. A huge hit for Zach Mahoney back up the middle scored Dylan Dufault and tied it up.

After a scoreless Central frame, the Riders have Casey Fugleberg on second in the bottom of the sixth. The passed ball allows Fugleberg to reach third and when the throw ends up in left field, the three sport athlete turns on the jets and the Riders take their first lead of the game and the final score of five-four.

"Well we had to play good defense, which we did towards the end. Pitching was fine. We had to string together some hits, which we did. We took advantage of what they gave us," Red River coach Mark Varriano said.

"When we were 4-0, everyone decided we had to get up and get going because it's a big rivalry like everyone says. We had to get runs across, get everyone on," Red River junior Zach Mahoney said.
