NEAR STEPHEN, MN (WDAZ-TV) A four-year-old boy is dead after a fire near the small town of Stephen. It happened about three miles north of there. Two of his brothers remain hospitalized with injuries from the blaze.
The town woke up to some heart-breaking news Saturday morning. Some say this is the worst tragedy to ever hit this town.
"Last night I actually heard the sirens start going off and they took off and I heard just tons and tons of emergency vehicles," Stephen resident Nolan Dokken said.
"I guess it's hard to put into words, it's just tragic and sad that something like this happens," Kathy Wright said.
Law enforcement is waiting to release the names, but in a town this size it doesn't take long for everyone to know who the victim is.
"I knew the boys from school because I work at the school," Wright said.
Firefighters and police officers were still at the home at 3 this afternoon trying to piece together what actually happened. Details are still unknown but folks in Stephen will do whatever they can to help.
"In small communities, they always come together and we'll help out as best we can and show support," Wright said.
The town of less than 700 is in disbelief that such a horrific incident happened. Residents say it's the worst thing to ever hit home.
"There's been fires but not to this extent," Wright said.
"It's kind of one of those things that's hard to talk about, I mean a lot of people knew him," Dokken said.
For now, Stephen residents are grieving a big loss.
