GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A Grand Forks woman who was trying to park her vehicle outside her apartment building apparently hit the gas by accident and drove into a split-level apartment unit.
Police say Chhali Bista crashed into the building at 1802 24th Avenue South at 7:10 p.m. Friday. No one was in the apartment unit at the time and Bista was not injured.
The front end of Bista's vehicle went through a set of windows in the split-level unit, destroyed some siding and one of two balcony supports. In all, the vehicle drove only a few yards from the parking space to the building.
One of the building managers estimates the damage at $2,000 to $4,000.
The windows of the damaged apartment unit were boarded up with plywood for the night. Bista's vehicle had very minor damage.
Bista was issued a summons for Failure to Have Vehicle Under Control.
In an earlier accident, at 5:36 p.m., the Howard Johnson Hotel was struck by a vehicle driven by Marissa Holly, Grand Forks.
According to police, Holly was operating a vehicle, attempting to shift into a parked position when the accident occurred. Instead of stopping, the vehicle continued forward, jumped a curb and struck the building.
Holly was treated by personnel from an ambulance from Altru Health System and released. No other injuries were reported. Minor damage was reported to her vehicle, while the building received little or no damage.
