DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - A Lake Region resort owner is being honored for helping expand tourism in North Dakota.
Woodland Resorts owner Kyle Blanchfield got the 2012 Tourism Industry Leader award from governor Jack Dalrymple.
Blanchfield helped start the first resort on Devils Lake in 1988.
He's had to move his business twice because of rising lake levels, but has continued to expand.
Blanchfield never expected to win an award for promoting tourism. He says the tourism industry has exploded since he opened Woodland Resorts.
It was the first lodging available next to Devils Lake, but now there are 1,000 rooms and camp sites available for tourists along the lake.
