GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A high school senior in Grand Forks is getting some help from the community after suffering a severed spinal column from a motorcycle accident.

The Ski and Bike Shop held the event on Saturday hoping to raise enough money for a custom made bike for Ben.

Instead of peddling with his feet, Ben will use his arms. The custom bike is roughly $5,000 but with the community's help, his family hopes he'll be able to be active again after the accident last October.

"It means a lot, just that the community is coming out and hanging out I guess and supporting me through my accident," Ben said.

"It's really just such an awesome thing, like how Ben said. The community is coming together. Ben's been a real active kid with biking and roller blading and outdoor sports and with his accident he's been so limited, and with the hand bike this is something he can do," Ben's dad Nathan Johnson said.

Ben plans on biking a marathon once he masters his new bike.
