BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Legislature will be asked to close a loophole in state law that affects disclosure of city expenses.
The law says cities have to publish lists of their checks if voters require disclosure of the information.
But the legal definition of checks doesn't include electronic payments. Cities don't have to publish those, even though school districts and counties may be required to disclose electronic payments.
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says he's prepared a bill for the next Legislature that would treat cities, counties and schools the same way when it comes to payment disclosure.
He says there's nothing in state law now to prevent cities from including electronic payments in their lists of published checks.
Stenehjem says he's hoping they do that until the law gets changed.
