(WDAZ-TV) - The Polk County Sheriff's Department says several grass fires near Union Lake appear to be arson.

Three different fire departments battled the blazes in several different locations for several hours. Fire Departments from Erskine, Mentor and McIntosh responded to the fires just after 1 a.m. Sunday south of Highway 2.

They say everything about the fires point to arson.

Firefighters from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pumped lake water on Monday to douse the hot spots from Sunday's grass fires.

"Just monitoring for the public's sake and safety," Jason Westholter said.

"The fire department responded and found a large grass fire including woods burning south of Union Lake," Sgt. Jim Tadman with the Polk County Sheriff's Department said.

Just as that fire was brought under control, two more fires a few miles away were discovered.

Tadman says there were three fires, but there were about eight different starting points.

No one was hurt and no structures were destroyed or damaged. Winds were strong in the area on Sunday and there is still a lack of precipitation on the ground.

Officials from the sheriff's department say there is little doubt this is a case of arson.

"There are no residents around there. There would be no reason for fire to start itself so somebody would have had to ignite it," Tadman said.

If you have any information, call the Polk County Sheriff's Department.
