(WDAZ-TV) - Leaders of the UND Alumni Association and Foundation will campaign across the state on Tuesday to encourage people to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

There will be news conferences in Fargo, Bismarck, Minot and Grand Forks to launch a campaign in support of Measure 4 on the June 12 primary ballot.

There is concern with possible confusion over what the ballot measure would mean. A day after the language of the ballot was released, it was changed. And there's a long history of the nickname issue through courts, the NCAA, the North Dakota Legislature and now a statewide vote.

As it will appear on the ballot, approving the measure would reaffirm the Legislature's repeal of a law requiring UND to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname, so a majority of "yes" votes would once again allow the university to retire the name and logo.

Voting "no" would mean UND has to keep the nickname and logo.

Tuesday’s news conferences are to begin at 9 a.m. in Fargo, with sessions at 11:30 a.m. in Bismarck, 1:30 p.m. in Minot and a final news conference at 4 p.m. at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.
