Nickname Supporters Confident in June Vote

(WDAZ-TV) - A spokesman for supporters of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo says the UND Alumni Association and Foundation are "over playing their hand, as usual."

(WDAZ-TV) - A spokesman for supporters of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo says the UND Alumni Association and Foundation are "over playing their hand, as usual."

Sean Johnson says the group has exaggerated facts on how continued use of the nickname and logo will hurt the University of North Dakota.

The group plans to continue its grassroots campaign that began in September. Johnson says the positive part of the UND Alumni effort is the clarification for voters on what a "yes" vote and what a "no" vote will mean on June 12.

"They don't necessarily speak for the alumni, even though they're from the Alumni Association and the Foundation board. There is a large number of UND alumni that are standing side by side with the Sioux people on this issue," Johnson said.

Johnson says the Spirit Lake group is more than half-way toward 27,000 signatures needed for its November campaign.

That effort would have voters deciding whether or not to change the North Dakota Constitution to say UND teams will always be known as the Fighting Sioux.
