Stranded Kayakers Rescued on Red Lake River Near Crookston

Firefighters rescued three kayakers who got lost on the Red Lake River near Crookston Wednesday night and became stranded on the riverbank. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the men called 911 at 9:17 p.m. after becoming lost in the dark while on the river.

Firefighters rescued three kayakers who got lost on the Red Lake River near Crookston Wednesday night and became stranded on the riverbank.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the men called 911 at 9:17 p.m. after becoming lost in the dark while on the river.

When Crookston Fire Department firefighters arrived, they discovered the kayakers did not have proper survival equipment or clothing. One of the three had capsized a kayak and was in the early stages of hypothermia, the sheriff’s office stated in a news release.

Crookston firefighters quickly found and rescued the three men from the riverbank about two miles west of the city.

Eric Blumke, 20, of Pillager, Minn., Andrew Motley, 20, of Hermantown, Minn., and John Simmons, 19, of Lake Shore, Minn., were treated and released at the scene.

The Crookston Fire Department and Crookston Area Ambulance also responded.
