EAST GRAND FORKS, MN (WDAZ-TV) - A long-debated and controversial lingerie store is open in the northern Red River Valley, but not in its original location or city.

Fantasy's opened for business Monday in East Grand Forks near 2nd St. and 2nd Ave. NE or about a block from the Point Bridge.

Fantasy's owner Kim Patterson says the store opened without problems on the east side of the Red River.

The store's original proposed location on N. Washington St. in Grand Forks caught a lot of backlash because it was so close to an elementary school and a few daycares.

The Grand Forks City Council ended up passing an ordinance that kept the so-called sex shop from opening within 1,000 feet of a school or 500 feet from a church, park or residential area.

The Fantasy's store in East Grand Forks is right across the street from the Greenway, about three blocks away from Sacred Heart High School and Sacred Heart Catholic Church and about four blocks from Riverside Christian School.

Patterson says she doesn't expect the same uproar that the Grand Forks location caused.

"The product will be a lot limited of what we sell here. We're open. Come and see what everyone was so worked up about," Patterson said.

Patterson wouldn't confirm if she still plans to file a lawsuit against Grand Forks, but says all avenues are open.

She said the store will still have a back room that features "bachelorette" items and massagers, but the number of products will be more limited than the Grand Forks store.

Kim Patterson and her husband Jim own a Fantasy's location in Fargo.
