Fantasy's Closed Once Again, May Have to Relocate to Industrial Zone

EAST GRAND FORKS, MN (WDAZ-TV) - Fantasy's new location in East Grand Forks has been shut down. The store's owners opened quietly Monday without contacting city officials, who say that was a problem.

Right now the store's doors will remain locked. The store opened, closed and reopened on Tuesday, all in less than 24 hours.

City officials say the building permits issued Tuesday were only for the store's sign and some shelving, so they closed the business Tuesday night.

After a meeting with city planning and zoning officials Wednesday, it's been determined that the business is sexually-oriented and it falls under the adult-use ordinance.

That means Fantasy's needs to be located in the city's industrial zone. It's current location is zoned commercial.

"There were, on our observation, there were various devices and 'aides' if you will, that can only be used in our interpretation for one purpose and that was a sexually-oriented manner," EGF City Administrator Scott Huizenga said.

Fantasy's owners signed a three-year lease for their current location. They are still locked into a five-year lease on N. Washington St. in Grand Forks.

They can appeal the decision to the Planning and Zoning Commission and to the City Council. Or they can relocate to the city's I-2 Industrial Zone. Owners are waiting for their lawyers to decide what's next.
