DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - A group of Devils Lake students is collecting memories from local seniors to share with generations to come.
Everyone has a unique life story, which helps shape the world today. Eighth graders in Devils Lake say they've learned a lot from talking to senior citizens and they're excited to share those stories with the rest of the Lake Region.
"My family was farmers and they came from Denmark in the first place," Axel Nielsen said.
Everyone has a tale to tell.
"We always called them cyclones and it picked my grandpa's farm up and just dropped it with all the cows in it," Elouise Lauinger said.
Stories like that will be able to live on thanks to Central Middle School students. They interviewed seniors at three retirement homes to preserve unique memories.
"It's kind of interesting to get to know someone when you hear all their stories," 8th grader Jessica Hoeges said.
"Was sitting in the garage in Sheyenne there when we first heard of the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor," Nielsen said.
"Things are changing and things aren't like they used to be. It's kind of important to know how things worked and to have these stories to look back on," Hoeges said.
"Life is different for you kids now. It's much easier," Lauinger said.
"They seem to have tougher lives, but they seem to like it," 8th grader Zachary Skrudall said.
If these stories aren't preserved now, they may be lost forever. The students say they know how vital it is to keep history from fading away.
"We don't realize how different things have been now and it would be nice to see people in the future to know how much different it has been," 8th grader Mikayla Wallace said.
The students filmed the interviews and will pair them with photographs from the seniors they interviewed. The interviews will be catalogued in the Devils Lake Public Library for anyone to come enjoy.
