W-A-O Students Help Out for 'Community Service Day'

WARREN, MN (WDAZ-TV) - Local teens spent the day cleaning ditches, washing windows and gardening for Community Service Day.

WARREN, MN (WDAZ-TV) - Local teens spent the day cleaning ditches, washing windows and gardening for Community Service Day.

Students from the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo School got the chance to help out people in their communities and feel good knowing they are making a difference.

Verona Poolman lives just outside of Warren and has trouble keeping up with all the chores on her seven acres of land.

"It's hard for me to look up, so window washing is hard for me to do and also cleaning the house," Poolman said.

That's why Verona was excited to see volunteers show up and help her do projects around the farm.

"They're digging my weeds over here and flowers the I got too many of and cleaning my house and cleaning my windows," Poolman said.

As a part of Community Service Day, the teens from Warren-Alvarado-Oslo are helping around all three towns.

"We got kids scraping park benches so they can be re-painted, kids roofing from the construction class, so it's a neat project helping people who need it," Physical Education teacher Tony Gullikson said.

"We are trying to instill volunteerism in the students, so this is the third year we've done this," project director Linda Gornowicz said.

After three years of volunteering, much of the senior class seem to be pros at helping people like Verona out.

"We're getting a lot done because we have a lot of hands, like I just washed her windows, which was easy, but it would take a long time for her to do by herself," volunteer Sarah Durand said.

"Just knowing that we can give to the community and helped for free, it makes you feel good," volunteer Bailey Jenkins said.

The students learn a little more about themselves by volunteering and those receiving help will never forget it.

Teens in 8th through 12th grade helped out in Warren, Alvarado and Oslo on Friday.
