GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Local law enforcement will honor officers that have fallen in the line of duty next week.

50 years ago, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Local, state and federal law enforcement will take part in the event.

"This year already we've lost 36 officers nationwide. Last year we lost 166 total. The year before that, 163, so it's a dangerous job," Grand Forks County Sheriff Bob Rost said.

The keynote speaker will be Lt. Governor Drew Wrigley.

The ceremony starts at 2 p.m. at the Grand Fork County Courthouse.
