DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - Businesses reach customers around the world through the internet and that boosts competition.

Lake Region retailers are being encouraged to expand their online presence.

People are going to the internet to buy anything and everything. The goal is to keep those searches local.

Amber Sander opened Boots and Heels eight months ago. She began building her online presence before her store was even open.

"I guess that I though that it was absolutely just necessary that we had to have a Facebook page for the business. There probably wasn't even much of a question in my mind," Sander said.

Sander doesn't have a website yet, just a Facebook page.

"It's a great way of interacting with my customers," Sander said.

It only takes one click of the mouse for someone to connect to a business on Facebook. Business owners can then instantly reach out to share sale items, new products, or anything else they want.

The summer tourism season is coming soon.

There may be wrong information about a business online. Setting up your own website or social media page can ensure potential customers get the right info.

Sander says few of her downtown neighbors have an extensive online presence. She says changing that will help business for the entire town.

"Small towns evolve. I think a lot more businesses are going to use the opportunity to get their businesses online and do something like Facebook and Twitter," Sander said,
