BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Two renovation projects totaling nearly $4 million are under way at the North Dakota Capitol building in Bismarck.
A $2.8 million exterior project involves replacing the caulking between limestone blocks, cleaning the limestone and repairing any damage, Capitol Facilities Manager John Boyle told The Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/JgiLdD ). The work is to wrap up by the end of November.
A $1 million interior project involves refinishing wood and cleaning brass in the House and Senate chambers. That work should be done by late July. The wood hasn't been restored in more than 20 years, Boyle said. The brass columns, grates and nameplates are being restored to their original condition, which has never been done before, he said.
"That's where the public will really see a difference," Boyle said.
The Capitol was completed during the Great Depression in 1934 and about four years after the original statehouse burned. It is dominated by a 242-foot tower. Granite, black marble and limestone were used in construction, with mahogany, walnut and maple featured in the building's interior.
