FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) — A two-day conference on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation is focusing on the future of American Indian nursing.

North Dakota State University is sponsoring the conference Tuesday and Wednesday in Fort Yates. Nursing professor Loretta Heuer says it's the first of its kind. She says it will start the dialogue on how to get more American Indian students into nursing.

About 50 people are expected to attend the conference, including nurses, other health care professionals and administrators, and nursing program faculty and administrators. They will work on strategies for recruiting Indian students into nursing programs, retaining them and helping them transition into the workforce.

The Standing Rock reservation straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.
