BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Authorities continue to search for an Army staff sergeant from Fort Stewart who went missing while swimming off the coast of St. Simons Island.

The soldier has been identified as Staff Sgt. Calvin J. Leblanc, from Minot, N.D. Military officials say Leblanc is a 30-year-old combat engineer assigned to the Third Infantry Division who has deployed three times.

The Coast Guard said in a news release late Sunday that it was notified by the soldier's wife around 5:20 p.m. that he had been caught in a rip current and was swept out to sea.

Air and boat rescue crews were launched shortly afterward. The Coast Guard has since suspended its search but the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Glynn County officials are continuing the effort with divers and helicopters.
