MOORHEAD – Police here used pepper spray and a Taser on a 19-year-old man after he allegedly threw a shovel at officers responding to a call about a possible attempted burglary at about 12:30 p.m. today.

As officers responded to the 3500 block of Village Green Drive, they received conflicting information about a physical altercation taking place, Lt. Tory Jacobson said.

When they arrived, they saw Omar Taha Yaseen holding a shovel and told him to drop it. Yaseen allegedly threw the shovel, and it glanced off one of officers, who wasn’t injured, Jacobson said.

After being pepper-sprayed and tased, Yaseen was arrested and taken by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing and is reported to involve mental health issues, Jacobson said.

Yaseen allegedly assaulted several other people before officers arrived. He’s being held in the Clay County Jail pending charges through the Clay County Attorney’s Office, including second-degree assault of a police officer.
