Thousands of people remain without power in the Dakotas and traveling is virtually impossible in many areas as a winter storm continues to pound the region.
More than 2,500 people were without electricity in North Dakota on Monday morning. An update for South Dakota was not immediately available, but more than 7,000 were without power in that state late Sunday.
No travel was advised in much of North Dakota, and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks closed for the day, though the Energy and Environmental Research Center on campus remained open. Wind gusts of more than 50 mph were reported in northeast North Dakota and a blizzard warning was in effect.
Because of the widespread power outages, South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds is asking people to check on their neighbors.
