GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Coyotes have been spotted in the Grand Forks area and police want people to be cautious.

In the past month, officers have received more calls than usual from people seeing the coyotes.

The most recent sightings have been near Burlington Northern, Ray Richards Golf Course and on South Belmont road.

To stay safe, officers are asking people not to leave food scraps out, keep small animals on a leash and do not approach them.

"They're afraid for children mainly and children just need to be taught these aren't dogs. Foxes and coyotes are not dogs, do not approach them," Community Service Officer Jean Youshefski said.

Officers are tracking the animals so if you see one, call the Grand Forks Police Department at 701-787-8000.
