Cavalier Likely Breaks Ice Cream Sundae World Record

CAVALIER, ND (WDAZ-TV) - A small North Dakota town scooped, sprinkled and swallowed an ice cream world record on Saturday. People there spent all morning working on the record for longest sundae to ever be made.

At 10 a.m. it wasn't looking like a hot summer day for some ice cream sundaes.

But things quickly cleared up and volunteers rolled out more than 600 feet of aluminum gutter to serve as a dish.

"They're going to get a gallon of ice cream and they're going to put that gallon in this four-foot chunk," volunteer Troy Demars said.

For every four feet, there was one gallon of ice cream, adding up to 150 gallons, and about $450, enough to feed the whole town and double the previous world record.

The idea started about five years ago, when some young folks decided it was time to put Cavalier on the map.

"We were trying to dream up something fun to do and ice cream's always a good time and wow it's finally happening," Renae Kemp said.

"Actually see it five years later coming together? It's phenomenal," Pembina County youth minister Tiffany Demars said.

Volunteers had a strategy, making sure they scooped it all out before it melted.

Volunteers are on that last step before they can declare the world record, making sure all the vanilla ice cream is touching, with chocolate syrup on top.

Although it's not official for another month, people in town were thrilled they finished and happy they could finally dig in.

Video and pictures of the sundae will be mailed to the Guiness World Records office in London for the record to be verified.
