BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's primary election polling places are starting to close.

Many North Dakota voting precincts close at 7 p.m. local time. State law says they can stay open as late as 9 p.m. local time.

Most of North Dakota is in the Central time zone. Parts of western North Dakota are in Mountain time.

Secretary of State Al Jaeger says he's hoping the assortment of ballot measures and primary races this year will make for a large turnout.

He's hoping for at least 140,000 voters.

There are measures on the ballot to abolish property taxes and allow the University of North Dakota to retire its Fighting Sioux athletics nickname.

Republicans also have primary contests for the U.S. Senate and House.
