BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Grafton farmer and businessman Tom Campbell ousted incumbent GOP Sen. Gerald Uglem Tuesday in a Republican state Senate primary in northeastern North Dakota.

Uglem is a rural Northwood farmer and emergency medical volunteer. He served in the House for eight years before he moved to the Senate in 2010. His four-year term was cut short by legislative redistricting last November.

Campbell is a partner in Campbell Farms of Grafton. It's a family business that grows and sells table and seed potatoes.

Campbell is also chairman of the board of Choice Financial Group, which has banking locations in eight North Dakota cities.

District 19 includes most of rural Grand Forks County and eastern Walsh County.
