(AP) — The state Board of Higher Education plans to kick off its monthly meeting Thursday by talking about the on-again, off-again University of North Dakota nickname.

Residents voted overwhelmingly earlier this week to uphold the Legislature's repeal of a state law requiring the school to use the Fighting Sioux nickname. The moniker had been brought out of retirement for a second time while the measure was decided.

Board President Grant Shaft, of Grand Forks, says he'll make a request at the meeting in Fargo to add the nickname to the agenda. Shaft says if the motion to resume retirement passes, UND would be asked to report its progress at a later date.

The board also is scheduled to review major projects for the next biennium and elect new officers.
