EAST GRAND FORKS, MN (WDAZ-TV) - A 17-year-old is in critical condition after using synthetic drugs, a problem local police are seeing an increase in.
This week a 17-year-old male was transported to Altru Hospital after ingesting and overdosing on an extract of hallucinogenic mushrooms. Police responded to the medical emergency call at 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Area law enforcement have responded to more calls in the past few weeks about the drugs and several arrests have been made for distribution.
Officers say to be cautious and stay away from drugs sold on the street.
"People need to be aware, so not buy the synthetic drugs on the street, it is uncontrolled, you have no idea what type of substance you're putting in your body. We've seen the reactions. They are severe, they can be life threatening," Lt. Rodney Hajicek said.
Officers say five or six young adults have been taken to the hospital because of synthetic drug use.
Hajicek said several arrests have been made regarding the distribution of synthetic drugs and investigation continues with East Grand Forks and Grand Forks police and the North Dakota Bureau Criminal of Investigation.
If you find any of these substances, you can drop them off at the police station to be destroyed.
