Town Square Farmer's Market Opens For The Season

GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A little rain Saturday morning couldn't keep vendors from opening up the first farmer's market of the season in Grand Forks. The Town Square Farmer's Market is in its 11th season, and vendors say customers come every year, rain or shine.

A little rain Saturday morning couldn't keep vendors from opening up the first farmer's market of the season in Grand Forks. The Town Square Farmer's Market is in its 11th season, and vendors say customers come every year, rain or shine.

"Every year. Every year it grows. I do better each season," vendor Paula Kallinen, who owns Creations by PK, said.

Paula Kallinen brought her jewelry, scarves and paintings to the Town Square Farmer's Market three years ago. She says that first season helped boost her business, and her customer-base.

"Actually I tried to just do a couple Saturdays and each week they would say to me, 'Are you going to be here next Saturday?' And I'd be like, 'Well ok.' And it just continued on like that," Kallinen said.

About 25 vendors fought the rain to set up Saturday morning, and they say more will come throughout the summer. More than 60 vendors set up shop one weekend last year. And each year, the farmers market sees about a dozen new vendors.

Kallinen says it's the one-on-one interaction with her customers that brings her back each week.

"I like to be able to get up, and you know, up close to them and personal, and see they can put in custom orders, you know they can see new things that I'm making. They get excited about it," Kallinen added.

And people who shop the farmer's market year after year say fresh, local produce and homemade goods keep them coming back every Saturday, all summer.

"I really appreciate having local things to buy, and I think it brings the community together and it's neat to take part in something that everybody is doing," shopper Elizabeth Caldwell said.

Kallinen says "Creations by PK" has taken off in the past couple years and she's had more opportunities than ever before.

She says she has the farmer's market and her customers to thank for it.

"My customers look for me in these areas but they always want to come back to the market," Kallinen said.

The Town Square Farmer's Market runs every Saturday, rain or shine, through September 29th. It opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 2:00 p.m.
