DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - State military leaders were in Devils Lake to show off Camp Grafton to a group of state legislators.

They want to share what the camp does, ahead of state budget talks that could affect the future of the camp.

A lot has changed at the camp in the last few years, so military leaders want to help remind legislators of everything the camp does for the military.

"We're really proud of Camp Grafton and the region. We want people to see just what it is we have," Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk said.

That's why North Dakota Adjuntant General David Sprynczynatyk opened up Camp Grafton to a group of seven state legislators.

"There has been so many dramatic improvements and additions to this camp in the last few years that probably most legislators from around the state have not seen," Sprynczynatyk said.

The timing of the tour isn't a coincidence.

"Our state legislature provides us funding every two years that helps support the operations and the management here at camp Grafton, helps support our soldiers and our airman," Sprynczynatyk said.

"We're probably going to have to pony up a little bit more at a state level. So this is going to be very important so that legislators can really see firsthand what the opportunities are here," State Sen. Dave Oehlke said.

Military leaders argue any funding to the camp will help the more than just soldiers throughout the state.

"If you look at the last couple years we've done a lot of domestic ops. A lot of flood ops at both ends of North Dakota," Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Job said.

The camp doesn't just benefit soldiers in North Dakota. A group of more than 300 Puerto Rican National Guard soldiers trained at the camp last month.

State funding stays on the administrative and maintenance side of the camp. For example, money was added to the current state budget for a custodian and other maintenance staff for the new Regional Training Institute.
