GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Police say a Grand Forks man who was arrested last week is tied to the deaths of two area teens in the past two weeks.

22-year-old Andrew Spofford is believed by investigators to be the main source of the synthetic drugs that killed 18-year-old Christian Bjerk and 17-year-old Elijah Stai.

Spofford does not face a murder charge, as 18-year-old Adam Budge does, for supplying Stai with the drug. But investigators believe Spofford was above Budge in the drug dealing circle.

Spofford is charged with possession for the purpose of delivering ecstasy but he has not been charged with anything that formally alleges he caused the two deaths.

Spofford is also charged with reckless endangerment involving a different drug, a synthetic psychedelic drug that investigators tie to the two deaths. It's is a Class C felony with a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

He's being held without bail because of European and West Coast drug connections and the possibility that he could flee if released.

Police have been trying to stay ahead of the recent rash of drug overdoses, but they say it's a "cat and mouse game," with dealers and users finding new ways to make and ingest the drugs.

Spofford is scheduled to appear in court on August 6, but his attorney says he will be seeking a bond hearing before that.
