GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - After more than 40 years of operation, a Grand Forks nonprofit is struggling to keep it's doors open.
The Listen Drop-In Center has had to cut its hours of operation in half and cut staff because of dwindling funds.
The center helps people with disabilities make friends and fit in better in the community. But the more than 1,300 adults that use the facility each year have had to find alternatives because of all the cuts.
Roberta Middagh has been volunteering at the Listen Drop-In Center for more than 30 years. One of her favorite things to do is play cards with friends.
But Middagh, along with her friends, have had to cut back on the amount of time spent at the center recently, because of a lack of funds.
"I volunteer on Friday nights with the dances sometimes, but if a person is gone, then I help out with that too," Middagh said.
The center used to operate six days a week, but now is down to three making it harder for those who rely on the service to find a place to go. There used to be four staff members, now there is one.
"It's just a matter of without that funding we aren't able to do the things we did before," Middagh said.
It takes nearly $180,000 to run the center for a year. So far the Center has raised $160,000, but there are worries about what will happen when those funds run out.
"We've been able to replace some of those dollars that'll get us by for almost a year of operation, but we're really worried about what will happen to the Drop-In after that," Listen Center Executive Director Charlie Bremseth said.
Both volunteers like Middagh and workers are hoping to keep the Center up and running for future generations.
"Cooler than cool doesn't describe this place. So without it, it would make the life for many a lot less happy," Listen Center Program Director Carla Tice said.
If you would like to help out the center, you can send donations to LISTEN Administrative Offices at 1407 24th Avenue South #100, Grand Forks North Dakota, 58201.
