GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - Police are investigating vandalism to above-ground pools on the north end of Grand Forks.
Vandals have slashed holes in 10 pools located in backyards over the last week and a half.
On this hot Wednesday afternoon, Matt and Brianna Filson can't jump into their backyard pool to cool off.
"We have had it since I was in first grade and I'm in 7th now," Matt said.
Over the weekend, someone took a sharp object and slashed the sides.
"Going all the way around," Brianna said.
"They realized they didn't go down low enough here so they decided to stab right there," Matt said.
The Filsons pool was just one of the pools vandals have targeted in this neighborhood on the north end of Grand Forks. Matt and Brianna's dad noticed their pool had been slashed last Saturday morning.
"He noticed water was just gushing everywhere. So we went to come back and look because he thought it was a pump problem and he looked at the pool and he just saw cut marks everywhere," Matt Filson said.
"At this point we really don't know who is causing the damage. We are following up on the leads that are available," Grand Forks police Sgt. Bill Macki said.
All of the pools have been damaged beyond repair.
"The potential damage is far more significant if the pools, some of the larger ones, were to drain into a basement in the area, we could be talking of thousands of dollars worth of damage," Sgt. Macki said.
Matt says their family plans to buy a new pool but not before his dad builds a much higher fence in their backyard.
"Dad had to explain how we couldn't swim and then we were kind of sad," Brianna said.
