GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A young Grand Forks boy set to begin kindergarten this fall is facing a hardship many of us will never face in our lifetime.

With the boy's family by his side, they're doing everything they can to save him from a life-threatening condition.

After receiving some devastating news last week, the Grand Forks family is calling on the community for help.

Kaine Cordts is your average five-year-old. He will start kindergarten at Wilder Elementary in the fall and he likes to ride big toys.

Kaine was also spending his summer playing outside, until earlier this month when his mom noticed him limping, losing mobility in his arm and not being able to hold his head up straight.

"He went to Altru on the 20th of June and had a cat scan and they found a mass in his brain," Kaine's aunt Dawn Cordts said.

The family immediately went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where an MRI revealed that the tumor was even larger than expected. It grew into his brain stem and and wrapped around his spinal cord, making it inoperable.

"I held him in my arms and they gassed him," Kaine's mom Ezra Estep said.

Ezra was glued to his side through a series of procedures. The family travels back to Rochester this Wednesday to find out if the tumor is cancerous and what type of chemotherapy and radiation will be used to try to shrink the tumor.

"I was devastated. I couldn't believe it, she is such a great mother," Dawn said.

Kaine could need chemotherapy for the rest of his life.

If you'd like to help the family out with medical costs, you can make a donation to Kaine Cordts at American Federal Bank in East Grand Forks.

The family is having a benefit for Kaine on July 17 at the Senior Center in East Grand Forks beginning at 5 pm.
