GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - The Grand Forks County Courthouse was evacuated Monday afternoon because of a reported leak in over-worked air conditioning equipment on the roof.

Alarms sounded around 2:35 p.m. and firefighters were called for smoke coming from the third floor.

Four fire trucks parked on Fourth St. between the courthouse and the new county office building, where most people who had been evacuated escaped the high temperatures and humidity outside.

Grand Forks County Sheriff Bob Rost said a Freon line from the air conditioner in the dome area of the courthouse came off, spilling Freon on a motor, causing it to overheat.

Employees were allowed back inside the building to get personal belongings, but the courthouse was closed for the rest of the day so repairs could be made.

The courthouse will be open at the normal time on Tuesday morning.

Assisting the Grand Forks Fire Department at the scene were Grand Forks County Sheriff's deputies and Altru ambulance.
