(WDAZ-TV) - Monday was the first day Devils Lake mail processing was done in Grand Forks. The change slows delivery times for mail coming in and out of the Lake Region.
Post office officials say the change won't affect local mail delivery but mail sent further away from Devils Lake could be delayed.
Deliveries to certain areas, including Minot, will now take two to three days instead of one.
It's part of a nationwide effort to save the Postal Service money in the face of declining revenues.
But that's not the only change at the Devils Lake post office.
Postmaster Jeff Olson is also leaving this month after four years. He admits the timing could be better, but he says he wants a job closer to his home in Jamestown.
"Is it the best time to leave? No. It's just the way things fell into place. With everything going on, and me leaving also. I feel bad about that, but I have to look at my family situation," Olson said.
The change in mail processing will only affect first class letters. Package and parcel delivery times should stay the same, according to a Postal Service spokesperson.
The change could result in the loss of up to three jobs at the Devils Lake Post Office but as of now, no positions have been eliminated.
