FARGO – Fargo Fire Department officials are calling a fire at 1546 Broadway Wednesday morning unusual and suspicious.
Firefighters arrived at the scene about 6:30 a.m. after neighbors reported smoke rising from the home. No one was home at the time.
After putting out the fire within minutes, firefighters discovered an 8-by-10-inch ammunition box in the middle of a front room, with hot charcoal inside, said Assistant Fire Chief Gary Lorenz.
The charcoal had burned a hole through the box and the floor as the fire spread to the room, he said.
Lorenz said investigators want to know why the hot charcoal was found in the box and why it was positioned in the middle of the room.
Lorenz estimated that the house sustained about $5,000 worth of damage due to the small fire and smoke.
Police had asked the public for help in locating the 41-year-old homeowner, Kris Hallock, to check on his welfare. Hallock was located on Wednesday evening.
