ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A teenage girl from St. Paul is dead after a speeding SUV hit and killed her as she waited for a bus.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports it happened about 1 p.m on Thursday outside Harding High School where the girl was attending summer school classes (http://bit.ly/KWrJYj). She has not been identified.

A St. Paul police spokesman says the vehicle apparently missed a corner, jumped a curb, hit a fire hydrant, lost control and went about 50 feet down an embankment before striking and killing the girl. A boy was standing with her but the police spokesman says he escaped major injury.

Witnesses told the police the SUV was traveling very fast. The police spokesman says the driver is in custody and being questioned by police.
