BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Two dozen school systems did not meet North Dakota's July 1 deadline for submitting school bullying policies.

The Department of Public Instruction received 205 of 229 required policies by the deadline. But those school systems that failed to meet the deadline won't be punished. Val Fischer, the director of safe and healthy schools, tells The Forum newspaper (http://bit.ly/PjZudL ) that the department was required to collect the policies but wasn't given any authority beyond that.

Fischer says most of the schools that didn't meet the deadline are private schools with small enrollments.

The Legislature last year mandated that public and private schools have policies in place by July 1 of this year. Schools must explain policies to students, offer anti-bullying programs and provide training to staff on bullying prevention.
