MN Law Enforcement to Increase Speed Patrols This Month

(WDAZ-TV) - If you have a bit of a lead foot behind the wheel, beware in Minnesota this month, as law enforcement amps up its speed patrols.

Officers say unsafe speed is one of the most common contributing factors in fatal crashes.

As a part of Toward Zero Deaths campaign, East Grand Forks Police Department, Crookston Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff's Department are sending more officers out this month in an effort to catch speeders.

Officers say when you speed, you have less time to respond to an issue of the road and a greater potential to lose control.

"We are just trying to step up the enforcement a little bit to increase our education as well. Trying to get the word out, have people slow down and have a good, safe summer," EGF Police Chief Michael Hedlund said.

The average speeding citation in Polk County for 10 miles over the speed limit is more than $120.

20 miles over the speed limit is double that fine.
