BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bond has been set for a man accused of driving his speeding pickup truck over a tent at a North Dakota campground, killing two young brothers from Texas and injuring their father and another boy.

Juan Acosta, of Newburg, is charged with manslaughter and drunken driving in the deaths early Sunday of 5-year-old Alaries Ruiz and his 9-year-old brother, Cyris Ruiz. Northeast District Court Judge Michael Sturdevant set bond for Acosta at $250,000 Tuesday.

Acosta, 30, dressed in orange jail coveralls, appeared by video conference from a jail in Rugby. He told the judge that he would be requesting a court-appointed attorney.

District Court clerk Rhonda Langehaug said Acosta also is charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The boys' 28-year-old father, Juan Ruiz, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in the crash at the Hahn's Bay Campground at Lake Metigoshe in Bottineau, less than two miles from the Canadian border. Their friend, 9-year-old Anthony Tabarez Jr., of Newburg, has minor injuries.

Troopers said Acosta was driving too fast on a gravel campground road, lost control and ran over the tent. He then crashed into a tree.

Acosta's next court hearing is slated for Friday.
